Build a Community Jewel- And a Conservation Legacy
Conservation is in our DNA
Imagine making a difference that will positively affect people and the environment for decades to come. The 35,000- square foot, state-of-art Pacific Seas Aquarium at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium will connect people to conservation of the world’s waters in new and innovative ways. The new aquarium and it’s diversity of marine life will immerse visitors in the Pacific Seas, from the cold waters of Alaska and Puget Sound to the warm depths of the Gulf of California.
A new aquarium for a changing world
The Pacific Seas Aquarium will achieve several important goals:
- Replace the deteriorating, 54 year old North Pacific Aquarium
- Provide critically needed animal life-support systems, including advanced water filtration and energy-efficient practices.
- Create an enhanced visitor experience.
- Inspire our visitors with a “call to conservation action.”
Old and New Unite
In summary, the Pacific Seas Aquarium will be a marriage of old and new, providing habitats for the native Puget Sound sea life that our visitors have grown to know and love while featuring new exhibits that spotlight farther reaches of the Pacific Ocean. Exciting new species, such as scalloped hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles and spotted eagle rays, will debut in the beautiful Baja Bay exhibit. Four stunning art installations will mesmerize guests as they explore the new aquarium.
Please Join Us
We invite you to become part of this amazing conservation legacy. With your financial support, the Pacific Seas Aquarium will be truly extraordinary.
The total cost of the Pacific Seas Aquarium is $51.6 million. About $45.5 million will come from a Metro Parks Tacoma bond measure and the Zoo is contributing $2.1 million from its reserve fund and other sources. Through the generosity of the community The Zoo Society has raised $2.5M of our $4.2M goal and we need YOUR help to achieve our community’s dream.
