It’s #funfactfriday and we’re swimming the day away with the Pacific Herring. These small fish typically form large schools from the water’s surface to as deep as 1300 feet. They use countershading as protection from predators. Their dark backs and silver sides and belly make them hard to see from above and below.

Did you know that the pancake tortoise 🥞 🐢 can live up to 35 years?! Unlike other tortoises, these cute little creatures from Tanzania and Kenya have a flexible shell that make them lightweight and faster than other tortoises. When hiding from predators they can wedge themselves in crevices and puff up their body so they can’t be pulled out. 😳

It`s #funfactfriday again with the animals @ptdefiancezoo
Did you know the muskox is known as the shaggy survivor of the Ice Age? These large hoofed mammals are herbivorous that feed primarily on grasses, woody plants, and moss.
Oh...and the muskoxen here at the Zoo love their enrichment with the giant Jolly ball!

Yay! It`s #funfactfriday
The Pacific Sea Nettle is beautiful to look at, but will give a sting if you touch their tentacles (which can grow up to 16 feet long 😮). They feed on zooplankton and even other jellies.
Despite their sting, they can become a meal for some sea turtles and birds.

Did you know that the basket star can live up to 35 years and weigh up to 11 pounds? This relative of the brittle star extends its barbed, branch-like arms to snag tiny crustaceans and plankton floating by. If the basket star turns from predator to prey and ends up losing an arm, it has the ability to grow it back!
